Bo District Launches Initiative to Combat Kush Addiction, Celebrates One Health Day
Bo District is stepping up its efforts to address the growing issue of kush addiction, a highly potent and addictive drug impacting the community. Dr. Amara Stevens Ngegbai, District Medical Officer and deputy leader of Bo’s anti-drug task force, recently announced that a new rehabilitation center in Gondama, Tikonko Chiefdom, is nearing completion.
This facility, soon to open, will offer crucial medical and psychosocial support to those battling kush addiction, providing a pathway to recovery and reintegration. The center aligns with President Julius Maada Bio’s national strategy to address substance abuse and strengthen public health services.
In addition to its drug intervention initiatives, Bo District celebrated One Health Day on November 3, 2024, promoting a unified approach to health that encompasses human, animal, and environmental well-being. The celebrations began with a symbolic football match featuring representatives from various health and environmental sectors, ending in a spirited 3-3 draw that underscored the importance of teamwork in tackling public health challenges.
On November 4, officials continued their outreach with a visit to Methodist High School in Bo City, educating students on the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. Led by District Extension Officer Mr. Mansary, the team included representatives from livestock, environmental protection, and health sectors, who emphasized the theme "Taking One Health into the Community" and highlighted the need for cross-sector collaboration in addressing complex health issues.
These combined efforts illustrate Bo District’s commitment to reducing substance abuse and fostering a community-focused approach to health, paving the way for a healthier and more resilient future.
