COFA Kicks Off New League Season Amidst Concerns Over Premier League Players Ban
The Central One Football Association (COFA) commenced its league season on Saturday at the Parade Ground in Freetown. However, the start of the season was overshadowed by concerns regarding a player ban and the condition of the stadium.
COFA Chairman Philison Cline-Cole voiced disappointment over the Western Area Football Association’s (WAFA) decision to prohibit Premier League players from participating in the COFA league. He stressed that the absence of these prominent players reduces public interest and hampers potential sponsorship opportunities.
In an effort to reverse the ban, COFA has appealed to the National Sports Authority (NSA) for assistance. During a familiarization visit, Cline-Cole also congratulated the newly appointed NSA Director, Dr. Emmunal Staff Abdulai, and emphasized COFA's commitment to developing football talent through various competitions.
Financial difficulties are a major issue for COFA, which relies heavily on member contributions and ticket sales. A significant concern raised is the poor condition of the Parade Ground, especially the restroom facilities and office spaces. Many fans and football experts in Freetown share these worries about the stadium's hygiene.
Despite these challenges, COFA remains dedicated to promoting football development. The kickoff of the league reflects their commitment to providing a platform for aspiring players, though the player ban and stadium conditions present substantial obstacles that COFA aims to address soon.
