Family Left Homeless After Fire Destroys Apartment in Kamakwie
A severe fire broke out on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 9, 2025, completely destroying a five-room apartment on Bayo Street in Kamakwie. The fire left a local family homeless and devastated.
Davidson Hassan Bangura, head of the household, said the fire was likely caused by exposed solar panel wires that had been wrapped in plastic as a temporary safety measure. He was at the market when he heard the news that his home was on fire. By the time he arrived, the apartment was already engulfed in flames.
Among the items lost in the blaze were a large sum of money, a motorcycle, a laptop, bundles of zinc, clothing, bags of gari, and other belongings. Particularly heartbreaking was the loss of funds set aside for his brother's surgery scheduled for the next day.
Davidson expressed gratitude to neighbors who rushed to help contain the fire, noting that no fire service responded to the emergency. An official from the Disaster Management Response later visited and took his statement.
He appealed to the government, humanitarian groups, and the general public for support, explaining that his family had lost everything. He, his wife, and their youngest child are currently staying with a neighbor, while two older children are being housed elsewhere temporarily.
He also voiced concern about his children’s education, as all their school supplies, uniforms, and materials were destroyed in the fire. The family now struggles with basic needs and has no financial resources to fall back on.
