Femme Collective Denounces Violence Against Women, Urges Justice for Sia Kamara

Femme Collective has strongly denounced the recent rise in violence against women and girls, urging swift justice in the case of Sia Kamara, who was allegedly beaten to death by her boyfriend on August 13, 2024.

The organization extended its deepest condolences to Sia Kamara's family and loved ones, calling on authorities to conduct a prompt and thorough investigation into her tragic and violent death. Femme Collective emphasized the need for the perpetrator to be fully prosecuted, sending a clear message that such heinous acts will not be tolerated.

The group pointed out that Sia Kamara's death, along with other recent incidents like the alleged abuse of Monica Pabai, highlights the hidden epidemic of violence that women in Sierra Leone continue to face. Femme Collective stressed that all women and girls deserve to live free from abuse, with their human rights respected and protected.

In its statement, Femme Collective called for the immediate and robust enforcement of laws and policies designed to safeguard women and girls in Sierra Leone. They argued that violence is a learned behavior and a choice, and that the focus should shift to holding men accountable for their actions to eradicate domestic violence.

The organization also criticized the traditional approach of only supporting women and children after they have been victimized, rather than preventing the violence in the first place. Femme Collective urged for the removal of obstacles that victims face in seeking justice and emphasized that violent behavior by men must not be tolerated.

Recognizing the importance of engaging men in this cause, Femme Collective expressed its commitment to working with both men and women to address the root causes of violence in society. They stressed the need for a coordinated approach to reform, which includes public awareness campaigns, education, increased support for victims, training for key workers, and enhanced services.

Femme Collective concluded by offering prayers for Sia Kamara’s soul and expressed hope that justice will be achieved. They also voiced concern for Monica Pabai, wishing her the necessary support during this challenging time, and encouraged women in abusive relationships to seek help and leave those situations immediately.
