Freetown City Council Distributes 25,000 Trees to Promote Urban Greening
The Freetown City Council (FCC) has embarked on a three-day tree distribution initiative, starting on Friday, August 23, aimed at enhancing the city's green spaces by planting 25,000 trees.
Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, alongside partners from the Ministry of Tourism, the National Tourist Board, IOM, GIZ, and Welthungerhilfe, kicked off the event by planting the first tree at Lumley Beach. This initiative also paid tribute to the late Sia Kamara, a significant contributor to the FCC’s previous tree-planting efforts, which received support from the World Bank and Bloomberg Philanthropies.
To ensure the success of the project, each tree will be digitally tracked for growth monitoring. Trees are being distributed at several key locations throughout Freetown, including Bottom Mango, Aberdeen Road Roundabout, Dwarzack Junction, Lumley Mack Pharmacy, Calaba Town, St. John, Wallace Johnson Street Bus Halt, Upgun Roundabout, Shell, and Congo Cross. This initiative marks a crucial step towards a greener, more sustainable Freetown.
