Freetown Endorses Fossil Fuel Ban, Advocates for Renewable Energy Transition

Freetown has become the second African capital to endorse the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, joining a global coalition of cities advocating for a transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. This decision underscores the city’s commitment to tackling climate change and promoting sustainable energy solutions.

Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr emphasized the urgency of the initiative, highlighting the treaty as a necessary step to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and unlock renewable energy potential. She also called for collaboration among African cities to address climate challenges.

The treaty has gained widespread support globally, including endorsements from Nobel laureates, organizations, and major cities such as Sydney, London, and Lima. Advocates argue it is essential for achieving climate justice and preventing severe environmental impacts.

Freetown’s leadership in this movement has been praised as a bold example for other cities to follow, signaling a strong commitment to sustainable energy development and a just transition for all.
