Guma Valley Water Company Welcomes New Managing Director in Smooth Leadership Transition
The Guma Valley Water Company (GVWC) has officially ushered in a new chapter of leadership following a formal handover ceremony held on Wednesday, 12 November 2025, at the company’s Head Office in Freetown.
The event brought together the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Dr. Sao-Kpato Hannah Isatta Macarthy, the Board of Directors, senior management, and staff, marking what many described as a moment of reassurance and continuity for the organization.
Board Chairman Ing. David Karim Fonnie called the transition a time for “reflection and reaffirmation of purpose.” He emphasized the company’s crucial responsibility in providing clean and reliable water to Freetown and the Western Area, and he applauded both the outgoing and incoming Managing Directors for their contributions to strengthening the institution.
Outgoing Managing Director, Ing. Maada S. Kpenge, used the moment to reflect on his 13 years of service. He highlighted major milestones under his leadership, including the rehabilitation of the Kongo Dam, the completion of the Angola Water Supply System, and advancements on the Allen Town project. He noted that annual revenue had grown from 2 billion to over 100 billion old Leones—progress he credited to improved efficiency, better management systems, and stronger service delivery. He also expressed appreciation to government partners and development agencies for their support over the years.
Incoming Managing Director, Ing. Mariwan Kallon, thanked the board and stakeholders for entrusting him with the role. He pledged to build on the company’s current momentum by promoting teamwork, professionalism, accountability, and expanding water supply coverage across the Western Area. He further emphasized the importance of earning and maintaining public trust.
Delivering the keynote address, Minister Macarthy praised the seamless transition, describing it as a sign of institutional strength. She encouraged the new leadership to prioritize ongoing water projects and ensure concrete improvements in service delivery.
The ceremony wrapped up with a shared commitment to enhanced performance, stronger collaboration, and greater efficiency in public service—setting the stage for GVWC to continue improving water access for communities across the region.
