Human Rights Commission Proposes Measures to Combat Kush Abuse in Sierra Leone

In response to the escalating crisis of kush abuse, particularly among the youth in Sierra Leone, the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) has issued a poignant statement outlining its deep concern and proposing three critical recommendations to address the issue.

The Commission's statement comes in the wake of alarming reports, both from traditional media outlets and social media platforms, detailing the dire consequences of kush abuse. Of particular concern is the recent tragedy of a mass burial comprising 32 suspected victims of kush-related fatalities, underscoring the urgency of the situation. Moreover, the HRCSL strongly condemned the inhumane treatment endured by victims, including forced head shaving, physical assaults, and social ostracization by their communities.

While acknowledging the efforts of law enforcement agencies, notably the Sierra Leone Police, in combating drug trafficking, the HRCSL stresses the need for more decisive action. In light of this, the Commission presents three key recommendations:

1. Declaration of a State of Public Health Emergency: The HRCSL urges President Bio to declare a state of public health emergency to confront the kush abuse epidemic head-on. Such a declaration would empower authorities to implement comprehensive measures aimed at mitigating the crisis and safeguarding public health.

2. Strengthening Border Security: Recognizing the role of porous borders in facilitating the illicit influx of kush into the country, the HRCSL advocates for bolstered security measures at border crossings. Heightened vigilance by security agencies, immigration officials, and customs authorities is deemed essential to stem the flow of this harmful substance.

3. Rehabilitation and Support Services: In addition to preventive measures, the HRCSL emphasizes the importance of providing rehabilitation and support services for individuals grappling with substance abuse. The Commission calls upon the government, particularly the Ministry of Social Welfare and the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA), to establish rehabilitation centers in high-risk areas. These centers would offer crucial assistance and treatment to those affected by kush abuse, thereby aiding in their recovery and reintegration into society.

The HRCSL underscores the gravity of the kush abuse crisis and emphasizes the imperative for a concerted, collaborative response. Only through proactive measures and robust support programs can Sierra Leone effectively address this pressing challenge and safeguard the well-being of its citizens, especially its youth. The Commission reaffirms its unwavering commitment to upholding human rights and advocating for the welfare of all Sierra Leoneans.

By focusing on pragmatic solutions and collective action, Sierra Leone can confront the scourge of kush abuse and pave the way for a healthier, safer future for its populace.
