India and Sierra Leone Deepen Ties Through Aquaculture Cooperation

The High Commission of India in Sierra Leone, in partnership with the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and WorldFish, has held a successful roundtable focused on strengthening collaboration in aquaculture and fisheries.

The event brought together Indian scientists, Sierra Leonean officials, and business leaders to discuss strategies for building a sustainable aquaculture system in the country. The Indian delegation, led by Dr. J.K. Jena, Deputy Director General of ICAR, exchanged ideas on improving fish farming practices, technology transfer, and investment in the fisheries industry.

Members of the Indian business community in Sierra Leone also joined the discussions, expressing strong interest in investing in freshwater aquaculture projects—an effort that is expected to boost food security and economic growth while reinforcing ties between the two nations.

The High Commission of India acknowledged the support of WorldFish in facilitating the visit and highlighted the partnership’s contribution to Sierra Leone’s Feed Salone initiative.

During their stay, the Indian team visited Holy Rosary Secondary School in Kenema to discuss plans for a freshwater aquaculture project at the school. The initiative is designed to support the school feeding program and inspire female students to explore entrepreneurship in fish farming.

The High Commission reaffirmed its commitment to deepening India–Sierra Leone cooperation in sustainable development, capacity building, and innovation for shared prosperity.
