Kailahun Traders Refuse to Lower Rice Prices Despite Government Order
Traders in Kailahun are defying the government’s directive to reduce rice prices, forcing residents to pay higher costs despite an official price reduction.
The government set the price of a 50kg bag of rice at 840 Leones, plus 13 Leones for transportation, bringing the total to 853 Leones in Kailahun. However, local traders continue to sell rice for over 1,000 Leones, making it increasingly difficult for families to afford basic meals.
“The price keeps rising, and it’s unbearable,” said Paul S. James, a resident. “We are struggling to feed our families.”
Many community members accuse traders of deliberately inflating prices to maximize profits, ignoring the government’s directive. During a local radio interview, James stated, “The government has reduced the price, but traders refuse to comply. This is exploitation.”
Frustrated residents are calling for urgent intervention from authorities to enforce price regulations. They demand regular inspections and penalties for non-compliance to prevent further hardship.
“The government needs to take action,” James urged. “We cannot keep suffering under these unfair price hikes.”
Public anger is growing in Kailahun, with residents insisting on strict enforcement to ensure traders follow the new pricing policy.
