Kenema Police Division Advocates for Enhanced Community Policing: A Pioneering Approach

Kenema Police Division Advocates for Enhanced Community Policing: A Pioneering Approach

towards bolstering community relations and fortifying local policing initiatives, the Sierra Leone Police, Kenema Division, embarked on an intensified local policing strategy on January 25, 2024. Spearheaded by Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Eric Murana Kamara, the initiative aims to foster collaborative partnerships between law enforcement and the public, ultimately enhancing security control within communities.

CSP Kamara, the architect behind this community-oriented policing approach, emphasized that the primary goal is to create safer communities through a symbiotic relationship between law enforcement and residents. The catalyst for this initiative was a series of recent robbery incidents within Kenema, prompting a strategic response to address the root causes of such crimes.

Addressing stakeholders, CSP Kamara highlighted the potential of partnership and genuine collaboration between the police and the community. By understanding the challenges and priorities unique to each community, law enforcement can tailor their strategies for immediate and effective intervention. He urged stakeholders to embrace this local policing approach, fostering a sense of ownership and strengthening the bond between the police force and the community.

Anthony Kamara, Chairman of the Local Policing Partnership Board (LPPB), Kenema Division, lauded the police's efforts and urged community members to actively participate in shaping policing strategies. This involvement, he noted, could significantly contribute to creating a safer and more secure environment.

Recognizing the innovative approach of the Kenema police in strengthening community relations, Kamara emphasized the potential benefits, including efficient crime prevention, improved response time, and overall enhanced safety and security environments.

The Chairman underscored the importance of involving communities in decision-making processes, stating that this approach could build stronger relationships, improve communication, and promote a more inclusive and equitable dispensation of police duties.

Inspector Mohamed Corneh, Operations Officer for Kenema Division, urged community stakeholders to engage in positive partnerships with the police, emphasizing that this collaboration is crucial for building trust and enhancing safety. He expressed concern over the reluctance of Kenema residents to contact the police in times of distress, urging stakeholders to encourage prompt reporting of security-related issues.

In a brief visit to various checkpoints within the Division, Inspector Corneh emphasized the importance of vigilance among checkpoint personnel in fulfilling their duties.

This groundbreaking initiative by the Kenema Police Division not only reflects a commitment to community safety but also signifies a paradigm shift towards a more inclusive and collaborative approach to law enforcement. As the community actively participates in shaping policing strategies, the vision is to create a safer, well-secured environment through mutual cooperation between the police and the residents they serve.
