Ministry of Planning and Economic Development Establishes Deadline for NGO Registration in Sierra Leone
The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development in Sierra Leone has officially declared the initiation of the registration process for both National and International Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) for the upcoming period spanning 2024 to 2025.
In a recent press release, the Ministry disclosed that the registration process is scheduled to commence on January 8, 2024. New and Renewal Registration Forms are now available at the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED) for collection.
NGOs operating within Sierra Leone are required to visit the NGO Coordinating Office at the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, located at the 1st Floor, NAO Building, Tower Hill, Freetown. The registration process will be open daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
It is crucial to note that registration with Local Councils in the areas of operation and signed Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with line Ministries are prerequisites for the issuance of Certificates.
Moreover, the Ministry is planning to conduct a nationwide verification of NGO offices to confirm their existence in January. The Renewal Registration deadline is set for the end of July, and only registered NGOs will be included in the gazette.
This move by the Ministry underscores the significance of regulating and formalizing the presence of NGOs within the country. By setting a clear deadline and establishing specific criteria for registration, the Ministry aims to enhance transparency and accountability in the NGO sector.
The issuance of Certificates contingent on adherence to SLAs and cooperation with local authorities reinforces the Ministry's commitment to ensuring that NGOs operate within the legal framework and contribute positively to the development goals of Sierra Leone.
As the registration process unfolds, NGOs are encouraged to comply with the outlined procedures to secure their place in the official gazette. This proactive step by the Ministry reflects a dedication to fostering a responsible and well-regulated NGO landscape in Sierra Leone.
