New Campaign Targets Animal Cruelty and Dog, Cat Consumption in Kailahun

New Campaign Targets Animal Cruelty and Dog, Cat Consumption in Kailahun

A local advocacy group in Sierra Leone, the Campaign Against Cruelty to Animals (CCA-SL), has launched an ambitious initiative to address animal cruelty and discourage the consumption of dogs and cats in Kailahun District. The program, unveiled on November 23, 2024, focuses on community and school-level education to shift societal attitudes toward animal welfare.

Speaking at the event, Chief Alpha Maada Ndoleh of Kailahun commended the initiative as a significant step toward ending harmful practices in the region. He emphasized that offenders would face penalties, reinforcing the district's commitment to promoting animal rights.

As part of the launch, a public march was held, highlighting the roles animals play in society and condemning mistreatment. The event also saw the distribution of educational materials to volunteers working with 10 schools, reaching over 500 students. Organizers plan to install a billboard with messages supporting the campaign to maintain public awareness.

This initiative, supported by partners like the Animal Welfare Institute, is a milestone in advancing animal welfare and sets an example for other districts in Sierra Leone.
