Parliament Confirms 15 New Appointments to Strengthen Sierra Leone’s Key National Institutions
Parliament has approved 15 presidential nominees to lead some of Sierra Leone’s most important public institutions, marking another step toward strengthening governance and improving service delivery across the country.
The approval came after the Second Report of the Committee on Appointments and the Public Service, chaired by Majority Leader Hon. Sahr Mathew Nyuma, was debated and adopted on Tuesday. Each nominee was thoroughly vetted on their professional background, integrity, tax compliance, and vision for their respective roles.
Among those confirmed were Justice Masiyambay Bangura as Chairman of the Legal Aid Board, Ing. Tideni Hawa Jabbi as Managing Director of the Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO), Mr. Festus Kallay as Director General of the Electricity and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC), and Ing. Mariwan Kallon as Managing Director of Guma Valley Water Company. Others were appointed to the National Youth Commission, the National Petroleum Regulatory Authority, the Sierra Leone Roads Authority, the Civil Aviation Authority, and the Railway Development and Regulatory Authority.
During the debate, lawmakers urged the newly approved officials to prioritize transparency, efficiency, and results in their respective sectors. Deputy Leader 2 of the Opposition, Hon. Aaron Aruna Koroma, commended the appointees and called for improved access to justice and better water services nationwide.
Other members of Parliament raised sector-specific concerns. Hon. Tamba Kellie emphasized the need for the Legal Aid Board to expand its services across all regions, while Hon. Lolloh Tongi called for stronger protection of water catchment areas vital to Guma Valley’s operations. Female MPs encouraged the appointees to focus on performance, accountability, and public service delivery.
Opposition Leader Hon. Abdul Kargbo reminded the appointees of their duty to serve the country with integrity, free from corruption and political influence. He encouraged them to embrace innovation and ensure that public institutions function effectively for the benefit of all citizens.
In his closing remarks, Hon. Nyuma expressed confidence in the nominees’ abilities, describing them as capable leaders who will help drive Sierra Leone’s development agenda forward. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing public institutions, improving water access, and promoting efficient governance nationwide.
The approval of these appointments reflects Parliament’s continued effort to ensure competent leadership across state institutions, with the goal of boosting accountability, service delivery, and public trust in government.
