President Bio Showcases Key Development Achievements in Parliament Address
In his address to the nation on August 7, 2024, President Bio of Sierra Leone highlighted significant development achievements under his administration.
President Bio reported a substantial decrease in inflation, from 55% in October 2023 to 32% in June 2024, crediting the success to the government's medium-term revenue mobilization strategy launched in 2023. This strategy has effectively reduced the budget deficit and improved domestic revenue collection, surpassing targets for 2023 and the first half of 2024.
"Our medium-term revenue mobilization strategy has improved revenue collection, exceeding the target in 2023 and the first half of 2024," stated President Bio.
He also emphasized the government's commitment to fiscal responsibility and sustainable debt levels, fostering optimism among citizens and stakeholders.
Additionally, President Bio noted the stabilization and appreciation of the Leone against major currencies as a key achievement. He outlined strategic improvements in the petroleum sector, including increased storage capacity that has reduced fuel costs, thereby alleviating economic burdens on citizens.
The president reiterated the government's dedication to revitalizing the blue economy and the fisheries sector, highlighting achievements such as surpassing revenue targets in fisheries, curbing illegal fishing, protecting fish stocks, and improving export certification. Plans are underway to develop commercial aquaculture systems, boost fish production, and create employment opportunities for women and youth in rural areas.
Concluding his address, President Bio assured that the national economy has grown since 2018, with a projected growth rate of 4.0% for 2024, driven by increased productivity in agriculture, mining, local manufacturing, and services.
