Prof. Lawrence Kamara Resigns as Acting Vice Chancellor of University of Sierra Leone
On February 7th, 2024, Professor Lawrence Kamara, the Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sierra Leone, tendered his resignation, as announced by the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Dr. Ramatulai Wurie, during a press briefing held at the Ministry's Conference Hall in New England Ville, Freetown. The Ministry has accepted Prof. Kamara's decision to step down from his position.
Dr. Wurie emphasized the importance of finding a suitable replacement, mentioning the opportunity to appoint an internationally renowned scholar to serve as the Acting Vice Chancellor and Principal until a permanent appointment is made. This interim appointment aims to bring in fresh perspectives and initiatives to enhance performance management and leadership within the university.
The announcement comes after a period of uncertainty regarding Prof. Kamara's status, with the University Court previously expressing its support for Prof. Mohamed Samai in accordance with the University Act. The dissolution of the University Court on January 25th further complicated the situation, prompting the Ministry to initiate investigations into the issues surrounding the former Court.
As the search for a new Acting Vice Chancellor and Principal begins, the University of Sierra Leone looks towards a period of transition and potential reform under new leadership.
