Samura Kamara's New Year Message Calls for Justice and National Renewal

In his 2025 New Year’s address, Sierra Leone’s opposition leader, Samura Kamara, expressed deep concern over the country’s economic struggles, political tensions, and the aftermath of the contentious 2023 elections. Kamara criticized the economic hardships faced by citizens, including rising costs, unemployment, and institutional instability, while emphasizing the need for justice and unity to rebuild the nation.

Kamara condemned the 2023 elections, describing them as flawed and manipulated, and renewed his call for electoral justice. He accused the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) of failing to provide transparent election results and claimed this undermined the country's hard-won democracy. Kamara urged international partners to support Sierra Leoneans in addressing electoral injustices.

Reflecting on the political climate, Kamara warned against leadership sustained by electoral fraud, arguing it fosters instability, weak governance, and distrust. He appealed to his party, the All People’s Congress (APC), to unite in their pursuit of justice and to champion the interests of the people.

Kamara also paid tribute to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, lauding his dedication to democracy and human rights, values he said resonate with Sierra Leone's ongoing struggles.

Concluding his address, Kamara called on Sierra Leoneans to enter 2025 with renewed faith, determination, and a commitment to justice and democracy. He urged collective action to overcome challenges and work toward a prosperous, fair, and united nation.
