Sierra Leone: 25 Soldiers Convicted in Coup Attempt, One Acquitted

In Freetown, a military court has convicted 25 soldiers for their roles in the failed coup attempt of November 26, 2023. The trial, which has been closely followed, saw one of the accused, WO1 Sitta Dumbuya, acquitted of all charges and released.

The charges against the 26 defendants included mutiny, conspiracy, and murder, related to their efforts to overthrow the government. The prosecution, led by State Prosecutor Joseph Sesay, presented a strong case supported by testimonies from 37 witnesses and over 180 pieces of evidence.

Sergeant Alhaji Koroma, one of the accused, pleaded guilty to some charges, further implicating his co-defendants. Defense lawyers are now presenting pleas before the sentencing phase.
