Sierra Leone and Rwanda Sign New Security Agreement
On August 26, 2024, Sierra Leone and Rwanda formalized a new security partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Kigali. The agreement was signed by Rwanda’s Interior Minister, Vincent Biruta, and Sierra Leone’s Maj. Gen. (Rtd) David Tamba Ocil Taluva.
The MoU covers key areas such as information technology, cybersecurity, and the fight against terrorism and violent extremism. Additionally, the two nations agreed to collaborate on combating illegal activities including firearms trafficking, human trafficking, drug trafficking, and money laundering.
In terms of correctional services, the agreement facilitates the exchange of information, technical cooperation, and best practices in custodial services and the transfer of sentenced individuals. The collaboration also extends to vocational training for prisoners, inmate rehabilitation programs, and sharing expertise in project management.
