Sierra Leone Engages US on Visa Restrictions Amid Ghana’s Ban Lift
Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister, Timothy Kabba, has provided clarity on the country’s visa situation with the United States following news that Ghana’s travel restrictions were recently lifted.
Kabba explained that discussions between Sierra Leone and the US are ongoing, with reviews taking place every ninety days. However, he cautioned that these reviews do not automatically guarantee the removal of sanctions.
He acknowledged the challenges Sierra Leoneans are facing when applying for visas, stressing that most of the issues stem from overstays on student and tourist visas. Since these applications are made directly by individuals, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs cannot intervene in the process.
The Minister urged Sierra Leoneans living illegally in the US to consider returning home voluntarily, noting that such actions would strengthen the government’s case for easing restrictions.
To address concerns, a committee has been set up to verify the nationality of Sierra Leoneans facing deportation. The government is also working closely with the US Department of State on repatriation measures.
Additionally, Sierra Leone continues to collaborate with the US Ambassador in Freetown and is in talks with other affected countries, including Togo and Equatorial Guinea, to improve visa processes and reduce overstays.
