"Sierra Leone Government Unveils Revised Airport Charges and Aeronautical Fees for Freetown International Airport"

On December 28, 2023, the Ministry of Transport and Aviation made a significant announcement regarding Freetown International Airport in Sierra Leone. The Government successfully negotiated an agreement with FIA Ltd. (formerly Summa Airport (SL) Ltd.) for the implementation of the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) arrangement. This agreement brings about a revision of airport charges, effective from March 1, 2024, and extending beyond.

The revised charges encompass various key areas, reflecting adjustments to enhance operational efficiency. The Passenger Service Charge will increase from $25 to $35, collected by FIA Ltd. The Airport Development Charge, previously $5, will incrementally rise by $1 yearly for 33 years, starting from 2024. Additionally, an Airport Safety Fee of $20 and Air Navigation Charge of $20 (collected by Sierra Leone Airports Authority) have been introduced.

The Ministry of Transport and Aviation has urged the Board of Airlines Representative (BAR) to apply for necessary adjustments to items one to four through the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The Aviation Security Charge remains unchanged at $39 per international departing passenger, collected by FIA Ltd.

Furthermore, the Government, in collaboration with FIA Ltd., introduces several Aeronautical Fees effective from March 1, 2024. These fees, payable in USD, include Landing Charges ranging from $28.00 to $9.60 per ton based on aircraft weight, Parking Fee at $3.05 per ton/hr, Shelter Fee at $4.36 per ton/day, Cargo Royalty Fee at $5.46 per 0.2 kg, and Fuel Charge at $6.35 per 0.1/Liter.

This official communication supersedes any prior correspondence on the subject and aims to facilitate the sustained development and operational efficiency of Freetown International Airport in the coming years. The Government's proactive measures, in collaboration with FIA Ltd., seek to ensure the continued growth and effectiveness of the airport's operations.
