Sierra Leone Police Unit Certified for Peacekeeping Mission in Somalia
The Sierra Leone Formed Police Unit (SLFPU-6) has been officially declared ready for deployment to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). This certification follows an intensive evaluation conducted from November 12 to 15, 2024, at the Sierra Leone Peacekeeping and Law Enforcement Academy (SILEA).
The assessment team, led by ACP Emmanuel Lithakong Ntpaba, confirmed the unit’s compliance with international peacekeeping standards. Tests included literacy and command proficiency, driving skills, weapon handling, medical fitness, and operational readiness. Officers successfully demonstrated their ability to assemble and disassemble firearms and performed well in simulated mission exercises.
ACP John Fayiah Tumbay, Head of Peacekeeping Operations, highlighted the rigorous selection process that began with over 600 applicants. After multiple stages of training and evaluations, 160 officers were selected for deployment, with additional personnel retained as reserves.
“This achievement reflects your dedication and readiness to serve. Your deployment underscores Sierra Leone’s commitment to global peacekeeping efforts,” ACP Tumbay remarked.
The unit’s certification marks a milestone for Sierra Leone, celebrating its growing role in international peacekeeping. Personnel and their trainers commemorated the achievement with photographs and expressions of pride in their preparedness.
