After narrowly missing victory in the Kentucky Derby, Sierra Leone capped an impressive season by winning the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic and being named the 2024 Champion 3-Year-Old Male at the 54th annual Eclipse Awards.
The son of Gun Runner, bred in Kentucky by Debby Oxley, showcased consistency throughout the season. Trained by Chad Brown, Sierra Leone claimed victories in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Blue Grass Stakes, and Risen Star Stakes, while placing second in the Kentucky Derby and Jim Dandy Stakes and finishing third in the Belmont and Travers Stakes.
In the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Sierra Leone staged a remarkable rally from 11th place to defeat Travers winner Fierceness by 1 1/2 lengths. This performance solidified his reputation as one of the most formidable 3-year-olds of the year.
Chad Brown expressed pride in Sierra Leone's performance, noting his consistent effort and ability to excel against older horses in North America’s richest race. Owned by a prominent partnership, including Peter Brant and Michael Tabor, Sierra Leone has amassed career earnings of over $6 million.
