Sierra Leone U-20 Female Team Bows Out of WAFU Tournament After Two Defeats

The Sierra Leone U-20 female team has been eliminated from the 2024 WAFU Tournament following two significant defeats by Liberia and Guinea. These losses, coupled with previous match outcomes, resulted in the team finishing with only 3 points from one victory in their three group stage matches.

Earlier in the tournament, the Liberia U-20 female team secured a dominant 7-0 victory over Sierra Leone, ensuring their advancement to the semifinals of the WAFU A U-20 Women’s Tournament. This heavy defeat put the Sierra Leonean team in a challenging position, requiring them to win their subsequent matches to stay in contention.

On Saturday, May 25, the Sierra Leone U-20 team faced Guinea in a crucial match that would determine their fate in the tournament. Despite their efforts and moments of resilience, the team fell short, losing 2-0 to their Guinean counterparts. This defeat sealed their exit from the tournament, ending their hopes of progressing to the next stage.

Throughout the tournament, the Sierra Leonean players displayed determination and glimpses of potential. However, the challenges they faced were formidable, and despite their best efforts, they were unable to secure the necessary victories to move forward.

The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) and fans will now reflect on the team’s performance, looking at areas of improvement for future competitions. The experience gained in this tournament will be invaluable for the young athletes as they continue to develop and aspire for better outcomes in upcoming tournaments.
