Social Welfare Minister Distributes 800 Bags of Rice and Food Items to the Muslim Community

In a gesture of goodwill and support, the Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Kaminty, facilitated the distribution of 800 bags of rice and other essential food items to the Muslim community on April 9, 2024. This initiative stemmed from a generous donation made by the Chinese Embassy in Freetown, aimed at assisting the Muslim population during the holy month of Ramadan.

The ceremony marking the handover of these provisions took place at the Ministry of Social Welfare’s office in New England Ville, Freetown. In attendance were representatives from various Islamic organizations, ensuring transparency and accountability in the distribution process.

Expressing gratitude to the Chinese Embassy for their support, Minister Kaminty emphasized the importance of ensuring that every member of the community benefits from such donations. She urged religious leaders to oversee the fair and equitable distribution of the food items, underscoring the ministry's commitment to serving the needs of all citizens.

Moreover, Minister Kaminty revealed her plans to engage with the embassy to extend similar assistance to the Christian community during Christmas 2024, demonstrating solidarity and inclusivity in their support initiatives.

The donated food items were allocated to four Islamic groups, each receiving a proportionate share based on their respective needs and outreach capabilities. The United Council of Imams, Inter-Religious Council Sierra Leone, Sierra Leone Muslim Congress Mission, and Supreme Islamic Council were among the recipients, with each organization receiving specific quantities of rice, cooking oil, and sugar.

Leaders of these religious groups expressed appreciation for the timely assistance provided by both the Minister and the Chinese Embassy. They assured that the donated items would be utilized for their intended purpose, benefitting those in need within their communities.

This collaborative effort between the Ministry of Social Welfare and the Chinese Embassy exemplifies the spirit of compassion and solidarity, underscoring the importance of collective action in addressing the socio-economic needs of vulnerable populations, especially during significant religious observances like Ramadan.
