Sports Ministry Holds Critical Meeting to Address Court Injunction Amid FIFA Suspension Threat
On December 2, 2024, the Ministry of Sports convened an urgent meeting to address the ongoing dispute within the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA). The meeting focused on a court injunction filed against the SLFA, which poses a risk of FIFA suspending Sierra Leone’s participation in international football.
The meeting was attended by ten members of the SLFA Executive Committee (EXCO) and the Executive Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA). Discussions centered on finding a resolution to the conflict and avoiding international sanctions, but tensions arose over proposals to pressure the FA President and other officials to reverse decisions made at the SLFA Congress.
The controversial suggestions included reopening nominations for judicial bodies and yielding to demands from factions backing the court action led by Moyamba. Critics argue that these proposals violate SLFA's statutes and undermine the association's independence.
The ongoing standoff has raised concerns about potential external interference in the governance of football in Sierra Leone, an issue that could attract FIFA's disapproval. FIFA enforces strict regulations against third-party involvement in national football governance and often imposes suspensions for such violations.
