Steven Caulker Retires, Leaving a Legacy in Sierra Leone Football
Steven Caulker, the former Sierra Leone captain, has announced his retirement from international football, concluding a transformative chapter in the nation’s sporting history.
After representing England in 2012, Caulker switched allegiance to Sierra Leone in 2021, playing a pivotal role in revitalizing the Leone Stars. Under his leadership, the team qualified for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, marking their first appearance in over two decades.
The 31-year-old defender, celebrated for his leadership on and off the field, made the decision to retire shortly after relinquishing his captaincy. His announcement came following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.
Reflecting on his international career, Caulker expressed pride in his achievements, stating: “It has been a tough decision to retire from international football. I’m proud to have earned 20 caps and to have represented Sierra Leone at the AFCON.”
