UN Secretary-General Extends Warm Regards to President Bio

President Bio, as the Coordinator of the African Union Committee of Ten (C-10), received a positive message from UN Secretary-General António Guterres during the consultative summit on UN Security Council reform. Guterres stressed the importance of redesigning global governance for universality, particularly as a safety net for developing countries. Acknowledging Africa's significant role in the Security Council's agenda, Guterres advocated for better representation.

President Bio, addressing historical injustices, emphasized Africa's underrepresentation in the Security Council due to colonial legacies. He highlighted ongoing efforts in intergovernmental negotiations and discussions with P-5 members to push for reform. Mentioning previous talks with President Biden, Bio noted the US President's commitment to lead reform efforts.

Looking ahead, President Bio outlined plans for Sierra Leone's presidency of the UN Security Council in August 2024, intending to host a high-level event on Security Council reform. His strategy involves engaging P-5 members and coordinating with C-10 Heads of State to ensure a unified voice advocating for Africa's special consideration in the reform process. This underscores Sierra Leone's commitment to equitable representation and addressing historical imbalances in the UN Security Council.
