UN Women Launch 16-Day Campaign to Combat Gender-Based Violence in Sierra Leone

UN Women Sierra Leone, with support from key partners, has officially commenced the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The campaign started with a dynamic town hall meeting in Bombali District and will extend to Tonkolili and Moyamba Districts.

The initiative seeks to unite communities in raising awareness and promoting action to eliminate violence against women and girls. Participants included politicians, students, civil society organizations, law enforcement, and development partners, all rallying under the theme “No Excuse for Gender-Based Violence.”

The campaign emphasizes engaging all sectors of society, particularly men and boys, to challenge harmful norms and foster a culture of respect and equality. With the powerful message, “Real men don’t rape; real men support women and girls,” the movement aims to reshape attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate violence.

Over the next several days, activities will include community discussions, educational workshops, and advocacy initiatives designed to empower women, mobilize stakeholders, and create sustainable solutions to gender-based violence.

Organizers stress that ending violence against women and girls is not just a women’s issue but a fundamental human rights concern. The campaign calls for bold action to build a safer, more inclusive society where everyone can live free from fear and violence.

The community is encouraged to unite in amplifying the message and taking meaningful steps to eradicate gender-based violence.
