UNIMAK, in response to the alarming escalation of drug abuse in Sierra Leone, has embarked on a significant campaign to bolster President Julius Maada Bio's recent declaration of a national emergency regarding drug and substance abuse.

The initiative commenced with a poignant procession traversing the streets of Makeni, where university staff and students, adorned in uniform UNIMAK attire, marched fervently while vocalizing anti-drug sentiments and brandishing placards denouncing drug abuse. Concurrently, another group utilized a sound system to disseminate crucial information regarding the perils associated with substance abuse.

Subsequent to the procession, a conference convened at the university's auditorium, serving as a platform for UNIMAK's Registrar, Foday Augustine Bangura, to reiterate the institution's unwavering commitment to combatting drug abuse. He delineated proactive measures undertaken to shield students from the allure of narcotics, particularly highlighting the menace posed by Kush, a synthetic drug wreaking havoc among Sierra Leone's youth.

Echoing President Bio's resolute stance, Bangura underscored, "Enough is enough," emphasizing the imperative of aligning with the presidential decree given the profound societal toll exacted by drug proliferation.

A poignant cautionary note was sounded by the Regional Commander of the Sierra Leone Police North East Region, AIG Aiah Edward Samadia, who implored the youth to eschew pernicious narcotics. He elucidated strategies aimed at fortifying resilience against drug temptation, illuminating the detrimental impact of substances like Kush, Marijuana, and Tramadol on both physical and mental well-being. Notably, he highlighted the pivotal role assumed by the Sierra Leone Police in identifying and apprehending perpetrators involved in the distribution and consumption of hazardous substances.

Makeni City Mayor, Abu Bakarr Lamtales Kamara, expressed heartfelt appreciation to President Bio for his decisive action in declaring a national emergency on drug and substance abuse, affirming solidarity in combating this pervasive societal menace.
