Michaela DePrince, Star Ballerina and Civil War Survivor, Passes Away at 29
Michaela DePrince, who survived the horrors of Sierra Leone’s civil war in the late 1990s, has died at the age of 29. As a child, she faced unimaginable hardships—her parents were killed, she was abandoned by her uncle, and witnessed the murder of her teacher while living in an orphanage.
One day, she found a magazine featuring a ballerina on the cover. The image of the dancer, serene and joyful, inspired Michaela, sparking a dream that seemed impossible. Against all odds, she pursued that dream and achieved international acclaim as a ballet dancer, performing with renowned companies, including the Boston Ballet in 2023.
