Sierra Leone Makeup Artist Breaks 19-Year-Old World Record

Sierra Leone Makeup Artist Breaks 19-Year-Old World Record

A talented makeup artist from Sierra Leone, Mary Yongai, has set a new Guinness World Record for the most cosmetic makeovers in 24 hours by a single artist. Mary, 26, completed 111 makeovers, surpassing her personal goal of 100 and breaking the previous record of 96, set in 2005 by Indonesia’s Martha Tilaar.

The challenge took place in Freetown, where a large crowd, including local celebrities and government officials, gathered to cheer her on. Following the strict rules of the competition, each makeover required a full cosmetic application, including foundation, blush, eyeliner, and lipstick.

During the 24-hour period, Mary took just one 20-minute break and relied solely on soft drinks for energy, skipping food and stimulants like caffeine. After her final makeover, celebrations erupted, but the overwhelming crowd caused her to briefly pass out.

Inspired by Nigerian chef Hilda Baci’s record-breaking cook-a-thon, Mary spent weeks practicing and eventually completed a trial run of 48 makeovers in eight hours, which gave her confidence to take on the challenge.

Beyond personal achievement, Mary hopes her record-breaking success will inspire others to pursue their own passions. She said, "Achieving this record is a dream come true. I’m proud to show that anything is possible with dedication."

This is Sierra Leone’s second world record, following the largest Sampa dance event in 2012.
