Sierra Leone Parliament Moves to Extend Maternity Leave Period
Sierra Leone's Parliament is considering a new law that would extend the maternity leave period for workers from 12 to 14 weeks. The proposed Employment Act 2022, introduced by Minister of Employment, Labour, and Social Security Mohamed Rahman Swaray, aims to replace outdated labor laws with more modern and internationally aligned regulations.
Minister Swaray emphasized that current labor laws are antiquated and do not meet contemporary needs. The new legislation is expected to address various labor issues, including human rights concerns and inadequate working conditions for many workers. The extended maternity leave is specifically designed to improve conditions for pregnant and lactating women, offering them more time to care for their newborns.
Civil society and human rights organizations have broadly welcomed the proposed law, noting that it will enhance the relationship between employers and employees and uphold workers' dignity across the nation.
