Zuma hospitalisation raises questions over MK Party campaign role
Jacob Zuma’s reported hospitalisation has created uncertainty over whether he will attend upcoming uMkhonto weSizwe Party campaign activities ahead of South Africa’s local government elections.
Questions have emerged over Jacob Zuma’s role in upcoming uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party campaign activities after local media reported that he was taken by ambulance to a medical clinic in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday.
MK Party officials said the former South African president was undergoing a routine medical check-up and was in good spirits. They did not provide further details about his condition.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, however, told reporters that Zuma had been unwell and was receiving medical treatment. Ramaphosa also wished the former president a speedy recovery.
Uncertainty over campaign appearances
The reported medical visit comes as the MK Party prepares for campaign activities ahead of South Africa’s local government elections. Zuma is expected to have a prominent role in preparations for the party’s manifesto launch in Mbombela.
It has not been confirmed whether he will take part in that event. His attendance at a planned gathering in the Mtooba area on October 18 also remains unclear.
The available information does not establish the nature of Zuma’s medical condition or confirm whether he will participate in other upcoming party events.
Zuma’s role in the MK Party
Zuma served as South Africa’s president from 2009 to 2018. He later helped propel the newly formed MK Party to third place in the country’s 2024 national elections.
His potential absence from campaign activities could affect the party’s preparations, although there has been no confirmation of any change to its planned events.
